Leadership Through Shared Experiences

Time: Wednesday, February 17, 2021 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Presented by Brian Riggs

As we navigate through another year of COVID, one thing remains constant - "normal" as we once knew it will never be the same. The global "shared experience" of COVID has changed the paradigm for how we view and interact within our world and while nothing could have prepared us for what has taken place over the past several months, as leaders we are presented with an opportunity to think and lead differently.

There's no way of knowing what lies on the other side of a post-pandemic world. Sustained behavioral change in terms of work and place and a renewed focus on family, values, and self are just a few of the attitudinal shifts many believe are here to stay (McKinzie Report 2020). But what about how we lead? How will our shared experience change the way we interact with our peers, our membership communities, and our team members? What role will empathy continue to play in our approach to leadership as we now belong to the same narrative? What opportunity does this leave us as volunteer leaders?

During this session we will explore the impact of the "global shared experience" and the foundational attitudinal shifts brought on by COVID. We will then explore how this experience provides an opportunity to rethink how we lead when there's no precedent. We will look at the reshaping of communities of interest, associations, and professional societies and discuss what opportunities exist in reshaping those environments.
